Alt Codes to Print Special Characters

Following is probably the most complete ALT Code chart on the Internet. First, I started with 00 through 01009. Then I started with 1 and went to 2999.

Most Alt Charts are for basic ASCII characters only. I searched the Internet for an exhaustive list but found none, not even by Microsoft, so I decided I would just find out what the limit is and make my own chart. Even my chart is not complete. You can get into many thousands and still produce characters with the Alt key combination.

One reason such a large number of characters are available is that there are many alphabets in the world as well as monetary systems, symbols for units of measurement and other characters. Possible uses include printing characters from alphabets of languages other than your own and special symbols. If you need to print the copyright symbol, it is a lot quicker to just press Alt plus 0169 than to place your cursor at the insertion point, open the special characters chart, locate the symbol and press the insert button. Some of the numbers preceded by a zero produce the same characters or symbols as those not starting with 0. For instance, Alt-035 and Alt-35 both produce #, but Alt-0153 produces ™ while Alt-153 produces Ò.”

IMPORTANT: For Alt codes to work, you must have Num Lock turned on. Just press the Num Lock key for the numeric pad so the light will come on. Hold down the Alt key while you press the given numbers on the numeric keypad. The numbers on the top row, above the keyboard, will not work for this.

I understand that the Alt codes are the same for all Windows 9x and XP operating systems. Don’t hold me to it. Also, not all characters are available in all fonts. If you type an Alt code and the font you are currently in does not have the character called for, your computer will automatically go to a font that has it, if such font is installed. The free fonts downloadable from the Internet are generally lacking in most of the codes beyond the basic ASCII.

To produce the character on a web page, using HTML, just type the number (without pressing the Alt key) and put &# before the number and a semicolon following it. For instance, @ will produce the @ symbol. Not all characters have an HTML equivalent. Because of this, when you see a long string of empty boxes in the chart, the Alt key combination may produce different characters for some of them.

Note: Words in parentheses ( ) relate to actions, not characters.

Where three or more consecutive combinations in the same row produce the same symbol, I combine the listing. Some symbols attach a space before or after them. A very few characters attach to the cursor, so you may need to add one or more spaces ahead of where you want to insert them.
